The Old County Tops is a classic Lake District fell race run in pairs over 60 km, linking Helvellyn, Scafell Pike, and Coniston Old Man in a formidable journey across the highest summits of Cumberland, Westmorland, and Lancashire. From Langdale, the route threads together valley trails, steep passes, and exposed mountain tops, creating a relentlessly varied mountain course in one of Britain’s most dramatic running landscapes. This is a serious and demanding challenge, with around 3,000 m of ascent, potentially harsh fell conditions, and a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency, navigation, and mountain experience. Support checkpoints add structure along the way, but the race’s character is defined by its rugged terrain, deep tradition, and the strong sense of camaraderie that makes completing it such a respected achievement in British fell running.
